Il Divo |
A Jury Prize winner at Cannes in 2008, this is an excellent cinematic biopic of seven-time Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, a political titan whose career was dogged with controversy. As a leader he forged close ties with the Vatican but also found himself the subject of a number of high profile criminal trials for the murder of an Italian journalist and for having connections with the Mafia. The film spans his seventh election to office of Prime Minister in 1992 up until his trial and acquittal. With a towering performance by Toni Servillo in the lead role and masterful direction by Paolo Sorrentino, this film is a fascinating look at the extraordinary life of one of Italy’s most enigmatic politicians.
