Film Weekend, running in collaboration with The Ark Toys!

Two-Day
Workshop – Animators in Residence ages: 10 - 12
10.30 am – 4 pm, Saturday and Sunday
Learn the art of animation with the 21st century toy –
the movie camera.
Make your own film in this two-day workshop with our animators-in-residence,
Delicious 9.
Working
with Dublin animation collective Delicious 9, you will take
part in a two day workshop covering storyboarding, script
development and stop motion animation to create a short
animated piece. Working together in a group, you will get
a hands-on introduction to all aspects of creating a short
animated story, working with toys, props and, most importantly,
your imagination to create a unique piece of work to take
home with you.

July 28th

Screening: Have a classic morning at IFI with March of the
Wooden Soldiers - a Laurel and Hardy hit in which the two
play well-meaning but brainless toymakers in Toyland. Songs,
laughs and thrills make this a perfect film for all the
family.

Screening: Award-winning filmmaker Eva
Saks will present 12 of her favourite films in a programme
that will delight young people and parents alike. The screening
will be followed by a questions and answers session with
one of American’s most unique and creative filmmakers

Animation toys: Learn about the early toys and inventions
that made pictures move. Bring your own pictures to life
with flick books and zoetropes.

Display from some of Ireland’s most exciting and cutting-edge
animators. See animators at work in the IFI foyer.

Screening: Enjoy a special screening of
modern animation classic Toy Story, everyone’s favourite
film on toys.

Computer games – meet some up and coming computer
gamesters and see them at work.

Workshop

11.30 am – 1 pm
Shadow puppet making & Lotte Reiniger film
Lotte Reiniger was a film director and animator, fascinated
with the Chinese art of silhouette puppetry. Make your own
shadow puppets in this practical workshop and see one of
Reiniger’s most famous films, The Adventures of Prince
Achmed, the first-ever animated feature film.

21st Century Toys – play or dismay?
How
does your child play today? As Internet, mobile phone, computer
games replace more conventional toys, what might be the
long-term effects of such technology- driven play?
Leading representatives from Internet safety, film distribution,
classification and parents’ organisations will be
present to discuss this question and issues relating to
contemporary toys and film.

Toy Story 2 family screening
Follow up on Buzz and Woody’s adventures in the sequel,
when Jessie the cowgirl arrives on the scene.

REELMAGIC
2007
Aimed at younger filmmakers (10 – 13 yrs) REELMAGIC
is a fun, active course with the emphasis on developing
practical filmmaking skills. Participants are encouraged
to take different roles behind and in front of the camera.
There will be a rough-cut screening of their film on the
last day when participants will also be presented with certificates
