 Beautifully shot in black and white, this tragic film from director Oskar Roehler tells of West German novelist Hanna Flanders (a powerfully evocative performance from Hannelore Elsner), who is mourning the collapse of the East German state while her own life is also falling apart. Based on the life of Roehler’s own mother, Gisela Elsner, the film laments the passing of an ideology and a life, but is also a son’s evocation of his parents’ love.
Dr Nick Hodgin, Honorary Research Fellow, Sheffield University, will talk about the role of memory in re-unification cinema.
