The talking point of this year’s Horrorthon will undoubtedly be the Irish premiere of acclaimed French shocker Martyrs, one of the more intense cinema-going experiences of recent times and the pinnacle to date of the French new wave of extreme horror flicks. On a superficial level, the plot of Martyrs — two damaged young women seek to wreak revenge on their abusers — resembles that of your average torture-porn knockoff; unlike its American counterparts, however, Pascal Laugier’s film has no interest whatsoever in titillating its audience with faux 'intensity’ and gore. This cinematic downward spiral, by turns tragic and utterly terrifying, is a bona fide descent into hell.
