Rumoured to be the subject of an upcoming remake, Fright Night, a loose adaptation of Dracula, brought the vampire movie into the modern teen era, predating films such as Near Dark and The Lost Boys. After witnessing a number of suspicious events, Charley (William Ragsdale) believes that his new neighbour Jerry (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire, although he fails to convince his girlfriend or best buddy. In desperation, Charley seeks the help of Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), the veteran star of vampire movies. Vincent too is more than sceptical, but he’s convinced following an incident at Dandridge’s house. When Jerry kidnaps Charley’s girlfriend, and turns his best friend into a vampire, Vincent is forced to become the reluctant hero and help the boy. Although director Tom Holland takes a very casual approach to some of the central tenets of vampire lore, this in no way detracts from the film’s witty script and many affectionate nods to the genre.
