ATTACK OF THE BEAST CREATURES

This one takes some explaining. A 1920s shipwreck leaves its survivors on a deserted island, battling the elements and waiting for rescue. Unfortunately for them, the island isn’t actually deserted. Their oversight is understandable, since the natives are a race of eighteeninch- tall voodoo dolls who don’t like intruders. Add some other indigenous surprises, such as lakes of acid, and all the elements of a titanic struggle for survival are in place. Equipped with effects that are most definitely not special, performances which make it difficult to tell the cast from the trees, and direction that is completely lacking in direction, Attack of the Beast Creatures emerges as a uniquely strange and sometimes hilarious farrago. Perhaps the funniest scenes are the fights between the castaways and the supposedly fearsome paper dolls, whose animation relies on the actors flailing their limbs about. In short, this is Z-movie madness at its best, or worst.
