AN EVENING WITH JOHN CANEMAKER

Animation historian, educator and Oscar-winning filmmaker John Canemaker will answer questions following the screening of two of his films. Professor Canemaker, whose numerous books on Disney history are essential reference material, is Chair of New York University’s Animation Programme. He is also the first National Film School Visiting Fellow at IADT, Dún Laoghaire. The Fellowship is supported by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Visiting Artists programme.

The Moon and the Son: An imagined Conversation won the Academy Award for Best Short Film (Animated). This autobiographical work explores the difficult emotional terrain of father-son relationships as seen through Canemaker’s own turbulent relationship with his father. It features the voices of Eli Wallach and John Turturro.

In Chuck Jones: Memories of Childhood, which was produced by Canemaker, an 84-year-old Jones talks about his life, particularly his childhood, his going to art school and studying the human body, his success as a Hollywood animator, and old age. As Jones talks, we see clips from his work and watch him draw. Simple animation illustrates parts of his story.
