100 European Horror Films - Edited by Steven Jay Schneider
From blood-sucking schoolgirls to flesh-eating zombies, from psychopathic killers to beasts from hell, 100 European Horror Films provides a lively and illuminating guide to a hundred key films from the 1920s to the present. Films covered in the book include early classics such as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Nosferatu and Vampyr, 1970s horror favourites such as Suspiria, Daughters of Darkness and The Tenant, and notable recent releases such as The Devil's Backbone and High Tension.
The Unsilvered Screen Surrealism on Film
Edited by Graeme Harper and Rob Stone
Luis Bunuel once recalled that 'the real purpose of surrealism was not to create a new literary, artistic, or even philosophical movement, but to explode the social order, to transform life itself.' This new book sees critics from the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan offer fresh and often provocative views of canonical surrealist works from Bunuel, Svankmajer and David Lynch, alongside lively analysis of surprisingly surrealist aspects of contemporary cinema.
Directors in British and Irish Cinema A Reference Companion
Edited by Robert Murphy
This unique volume presents a comprehensive reference guide to directors who have worked in the British and Irish film industries between 1895 and 2006. Each of its 1028 entries on individual directors gives a resume of their career, evaluates their achievements and provides a guide to source material and a complete filmography. The book is packed with fascinating facts, critical summaries and invaluable contextualising details. It is an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in film-making in Britain and Ireland.
Understanding Audiences and the Film Industry - Roy Stafford
This new book brings together an introduction to academic study of audiences as 'readers' of films and an investigation into how the film industry perceives audiences as part of its industrial practices. The approach draws on ideas from film, media and cultural studies in order to present new insights into a range of puzzling questions, such as: what makes the biggest box-office films attractive to audiences? Why do films that work well with audiences sometimes have poor distribution? What is a cult film, and how do such films gain this status?
The Cinema of North Africa and the Middle East
Edited by Gonul Donmez-Colin
The appreciation of the cinema of North Africa and the Middle East has blossomed over the 1990s and 2000s with worldwide acclaim for films from such eminent directors as Abbas Kiarostami and Nuri Bilge Ceylan. This volume is a timely exploration of the vibrant films of this reltively undiscovered region of filmmaking, featuring 24 essays on individual films, many by scholars and writers based in the region. It explores established film cultures such as those of Turkey and Iran, and also nascent cinemas such as those of Israel, Palestine and Syria.

DVDs:

Into Great Silence - Philip Groning
Into Great Silence is the phenomenal box office smash hit about the life of Carthusian monks in the French Alps. The director, Philip Groning, made his request to film inside the monastry 19 years ago, only to be told that it was still 'too early.' Eventually, as a result of this longstanding and trusting relationship between Groning and the General Prior, permission to film was granted. The film is a very strict, next to silent documentary on monastic life with no music or commentary. The viewer is invited to watch the film as a meditative experience.
The Andrei Tarkovsky Companion
Tarkovsky is unquestionably one of the greatest filmmakers that Russia, or indeed the world, has ever seen. Although he made just seven feature films before he died at the age of 54, each is an artistic masterpiece and a landmark of world cinema. This exceptional body of work, characterised by spiritual and metaphysical exploration of the human condition together with images of extraordinary beauty, is celebrated in this DVD with films by acclaimed directors Alexander Sokurov, Chris Marker, and Tarkovsky himself.
Jodorowsky Remastered 6 DVD boxset
With El Topo, the violent tale of a leather-clad gunslinger on a mission to challenge four Zen masters, cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky gave birth to the counterculture phenomenon of the midnight movie and carved out a place in history as one of cinema's most unique and visionary filmmakers. This essential collection of the director's finest work includes El Topo and its stunning follow up, The Holy Mountain, as well as his debut feature Fando and Lis.
Jean-Luc Godard: Volume 1
The most influential of French directors, Godard was a key figure of the New Wave of the 1960s. From his 1959 debut, A Bout de Souffle, Godard has remained controversial and intriguing throughout his lengthy film career. This collection also contains Passion, Alphaville and Made in the USA, as well as a comprehensive bonus disc of special features.
