Tiernan MacBride Library

Named in honour of Tiernan MacBride in recognition of his contribution to the Irish film industry, the Library holds one of the largest collections of film related publications in Ireland. The collection includes a wide range of books, journals, and reports covering both international and Irish cinema. The Library’s collections are reference only, however photocopying facilities are available. Researchers, students, teachers, filmmakers and members of the public are all welcome to use the Library. Access to the library outside of these hours is strictly by appointment only.

The Library will be closed from Monday August 23rd until Monday September 6th.

Library Charges:
Students €1.50 per visit;
General public €2.00 per visit.

Annual Library Membership:
Students €15.00 per year;
General public €20.00 per year.

College Subscriptions:
Annual subscriptions to the Library are available to Third Level Colleges; please contact the Librarian [here] for further details.

Book Collection:
With over 2,000 books, the collection encompasses all aspects of film history, criticism, theory, and production. Popular subjects include genre, gender studies, film production, directors, screenwriting, and early cinema. There is a comprehensive collection of books on Irish cinema, but other national cinemas are also well represented in the collection.

Journals:
The periodical collection includes publications dating from the 1930s to the present. The major international journals such as Film Quarterly, Sight & Sound, and Variety are included, as well as specialist periodicals like American Cinematographer. The Library also holds Irish film magazines from different eras, including The Screen, Film West and Film Ireland.

Information Files:
This unique resource comprises of information files on the Irish film industry. Files are kept on individual Irish productions, directors, actors, film festivals, cinemas, the film industry, and television. The files can include newspaper and journal articles, reviews, interviews, and occasionally production notes.

Library Databases:
The Library’s book catalogue can be accessed here.

Access to both the book and the Film Information Files databases are available in the Library. Two film related databases are also available:

FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals contains over 330,000 article references from more than 300 periodicals. It offers in-depth coverage of the world's foremost academic and popular film journals from 1972 to the present day.

Film Index International is based on the SIFT (Summary of Information on Film and Television) database compiled by the British Film Institute. The database provides in-depth indexing of no fewer than 90 000 international films, from the first silent movies to the latest blockbusters – and biographical information for approximately 38 000 personalities.
