As part of the Irish Film Institute, the Irish Film Archive acquires, preserves and makes available Ireland’s moving image heritage, working to ensure Ireland’s rich and varied film history (both amateur and commercial) is protected and accessible, for the benefit of current and future generations. The material we safeguard is historically, socially and culturally invaluable and provides a unique visual record of the development of Ireland from 1897 to the present day. We also recognise the importance of providing access to this fascinating material and actively share the collection with both the public and the film industry. We have facilities for researchers to view our collections in-house, we provide material to film-makers for inclusion in documentaries exploring Ireland’s culture and history and we have an extensive programme of activities at our premises in Dublin’s Temple Bar, as well as regionally and indeed internationally. These activities include screenings of films each month from the Archive at the IFI cinema for the public, an international film programme, Reel Ireland, that brings Irish cinema to venues across the globe, and a range of other endeavours such as evening courses on Irish Film, and book and DVD publishing.
